US Dept. of Homeland Security
Cutting Edge Technology to
Protect America. Homeland
Security harnesses our nation’s scientific and technological resources
to provide Federal, state, and local officials with the technology and
capabilities to protect the homeland. One area of focus for the
Department is catastrophic terrorism—threats to the security of our
homeland that could result in large-scale loss of life and major
economic impact. Research is designed to counter threats to the
homeland, both by evolutionary improvements to current capabilities and
development of revolutionary, new capabilities. |

Avian and Pandemic Flu Information
A pandemic is a global disease
outbreak. A flu pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges
for which people have little or no immunity and for which there is no
vaccine. The disease spreads easily person-to-person, causes serious
illness, and can sweep across the country and around the world in very
short time. It's difficult to predict when the next influenza pandemic
will occur or how severe it will be. Wherever and whenever a pandemic
starts, the world is at risk. Countries might, through measures such as
border closures and travel restrictions, delay arrival of the virus, but
cannot stop it.
