Secure Surveys Online FAQ's

How difficult is it going to be for end users to answer your questions? -
If it is going to be a time consuming process, a lead e-mail should be sent out to give users a heads up about what is to come.  This extra time can be used to mobilize information and start to track down certain resources.  If people take the time to prepare, they also become more likely to complete the survey that you send them.

What type of question will give you the necessary information? - Open-ended questions might take a user a longer time to fill out, but in some cases it may be the only way to elicit an accurate response.  At other times, multiple choice or rank order questions may be able to give you more accurate details.  There is a fine balance between questions that are user friendly and questions that generate useful detail.

How are you going to order the questions? -
It is important not to let any question reveal too much information or else it will lead the user to have a bias towards following questions.  Additionally, if research heavy questions are at the very beginning of a survey a user may get turned off and you will experience an overall high abandonment rate.  Questions need to find the balance between being so random that they are hard to follow and so in line that a user will become bored and not fully read the options.

Also, page breaks need to be strategically located to 1) keep a user from having to scroll through a seemingly endless survey and 2) keep a user from becoming aggravated at having to move to a new page too often.
